The Lincoln stuff, along with the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house, displayed Edsel Bryant Ford’s freshly-restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster at New York International Auto Show.
The 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster. A total one-of-a-kind concept vehicle created by Edsel Ford, the Model 40 was a styling exercise by the company. Made with a large grille for cooling, pretty cool , the strong motor V8 it has fully integrated headlamps, long nose and custom aluminum bodywork. a classic Ford Flathead V8 powers the rear wheels, pretty cutting edge back then, considering all headlamps were freestanding.
The Model 40 is a two-seater,What is interesting about this early concept car is the fact that it wasn’t really traceable from the late ’50s until very recently. It was thought to have been sold off and ownership information lost forever. In ’99 the car once again rose into public view and was purchased by the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, a nonprofit historic estate in Michigan. Since then, it’s been completely restored and now able to travel to shows for thousands of spectators to enjoy!
After Edsel passed away in 1943, the vehicle made a few scant appearances around the country before vanishing. It surfaced again at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1999 and sold to a collector for a heady $1.76 million. When the collector died, the car was returned to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House before receiving a full restoration to return it to its former glory. 2012 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW
In 1900, the New York International Automobile Show became North America’s first automotive exhibition. For over one hundred years, through depression, war, boom-time, oil crisis, recession and growth, it has continued its pioneering tradition of bringing new and innovative ideas to a national and world stage. In the last decade, the Show has boosted the number of new vehicle announcements, broken attendance figures, and increased media attention to extraordinary levels.
Combined with the City’s energy, and the fact that metro New York is one of the nation’s largest markets for new car and truck sales, the Show is now one of the most important automotive events in the world.
